Imagine yourself in the position of a nervous new student being facing crowds of supposedly “friendly” screaming upperclassmen stomping and cheering you on to bring you into their house. This was one of the many St. Mary’s traditions recently experienced by transfer students and members of this year’s freshmen class.

With a relatively small team that included some new faces, the St. Mary’s swim team had good “rebuilding” year that featured some very impressive individual performances.
Senior Michael Ellison is regarded as one of the best swimmers on the team, and this year he turned in a first-place finish in the 50-meter freestyle at the Buckeye District Championships on Oct. 27, with a time of 22.32 seconds. He also had a first-place performance in the 100-meter freestyle on Oct. 22 at the small school championship meet with a time of 48.47 seconds.

The St. Mary’s varsity football team turned in its fifth straight victory on Nov. 4 with a 28-14 win over Lake Havasu Havasu High School in their last regional game of the season.
In addition to the victory, the game featured an impressive performance by senior wide receiver/safety PJ Lewis that included 101 rushing yards, three receptions (for 43 yards) and two touchdowns.

The St. Mary’s High School fall production of “The Night of January 16th” offers audience members an opportunity to take part in the action on stage. The play, which is scheduled for November 10-12 in Wiegand Auditorium (in the Piper building).

The St. Mary’s Lady Knights varsity volleyball team is off to a great start in the 2022 season. The Knights are currently 14-9 (4-3 in region). The Lady Knights took home their first region win against Saguaro High School on Sept. 12, defeating the Sabercats 3-0. As of Sept. 22, junior Shelbie Lemm is leading the team in kills (180), and senior Zoe Rideau is leading the team in blocks (22).

Building on the success of last year, when four St. Mary’s runners made it to the state finals, this year’s cross-country team looks forward to a very promising season that will offer returning seniors Lily Fairbanks and Dee Dee Herrington opportunities to establish lasting legacies in their final season.

Have you ever considered how much is sacrificed for you to receive a “Catholic Education”? Just in terms of money, the one-year tuition at St. Mary’s is more than $12,000. Given that so much is being invested in your education at St. Mary’s, two important questions come to mind: “What is meant by the term Catholic Education?” and “Does St. Mary’s offer a good Catholic education that challenges students to become the people God is calling them to be?” In other words, is a St. Mary’s education worth the investment?

Playing their first Skyline Region game of the season in front of a huge Home Coming crowd at Phoenix College on Oct. 14, the St. Mary’s Knights varsity football team defeated the Deer Valley Skyhawks to go 4-2 on the season.

Is the animation of today demonstrating a shift toward greater racial sensitivity and a more accurate portrayal of diverse cultural backgrounds? It was just a few years ago that characters such as Speedy Gonzales and Baba Looey were the most well-known Hispanic characters on television – and these were cartoon characters!

Former St. Mary’s chaplain and theology teacher, Father Estevan Wetzel, made his long-awaited return to our campus on Sept. 7 when our JV football team played against Pope John Paul II High School. (Earlier this year, Fr. Wetzel was appointed chaplain at JP II high school and parochial vicar of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish.)
A self-proclaimed “neutral supporter” of both teams, Father Wetzel was shown much love from the Saint Mary’s students who clearly miss his presence on campus. During his tenure at St. Mary’s, Father Wetzel deeply affected the lives of many students by having private talks and administering the sacraments. He never turned down an opportunity to speak with any student, and he was very capable of identifying students who were troubled and in need of some advice.
