Boys Varsity Basketball Goes Deep in State Playoffs

By Alexander Soroko

The St. Mary’s Knights basketball team led by Head Coach Damin Lopez, had a great season and playoff run with some amazing plays to cap off the year. The Knights went 19-8 after playing against some of the toughest competition in the state and even against one of the best teams in the nation. The Knights also represented St. Mary’s at two out-of-state tournaments. During league play, the Knights were undefeated.

With a variety of amazing plays, including “alley-oops” from Styles Phipps to Garrison Phelps and Jeremiah “Bear” Cherry, to clutch threes from Jacob Estrella and Kenny White, this season was nothing short of a straight-up highlight reel. The Knights went deep into the playoffs, beating Pueblo (83-43) and Paradise Honors (79-64). Ultimately, the team made it to the “Final Four,” where they battled hard in an impressive comeback against (eventual-state-champion) Mesquite. Unfortunately, that game and the season ended with the opponents hitting a miracle shot which was after the buzzer, but ultimately earned them the victory.

Several members of this year’s team earned all-region honors. Congratulations to:
